Who Struggles With Stuttering Problems?

Many people experience stuttering problems at some point in their lives. As a matter of fact, virtually everyone has lapses in their level of verbal fluency when they repeat a word before continuing with their sentence. This is a perfectly normal part of speech, but actual stuttering problems are experienced at some point in life by about five percent of the population.

Most of those who have stuttering problems are children. As a matter of fact, as many as twenty percent of children stutter in early childhood. It is a natural part of language development for many children as their knowledge and skill increase and they sometimes have a hard time using them all together to say what they have in their minds.

However, these early episodes of stuttering don't usually last long, and therefore do not develop into a long term stuttering problem. This is the case with only about one percent of the children. This means, then, that stuttering problems are persistent for about one percent of the population.

But where does stuttering come from? Who is likely to develop it? Stuttering is a genetic disorder and about sixty percent of all adults who stutter have a family member who stutters, too. However, genetics isn't the only factor that comes into play.

Stuttering sometimes results in children who have other language or developmental delays. It has also been found that those who stutter process language and speech in a different part of their brains, suggesting that neurophysiology plays a role, too.

It has been suggested that one more factor might increase the chances of a person stuttering. This is overly high expectations at home, and a fast paced lifestyle. These can create anxiety that can make speaking correctly more difficult.

There is no question that overall anxiety is a large part of stuttering. Although it may not always be visible, most stutterers experience some very serious anxiety and other emotions such as fear, stress, shame and embarrassment that can make even just attempting to communicate very difficult in some situations. They may develop a low self esteem and their confidence may dwindle. Both of these things can cause stuttering to worsen, leading to a bad cycle.

It's not perfectly clear whether the anxiety come before the stuttering, or results from it, but one thing is certain, apart from the actual speech aspects of the stuttering problem, it is absolutely essential that the emotional impact is explored with the professional evaluating and treating the person who stutters.

Stuttering is a disorder that can really make interacting with those around you difficult and even emotionally painful. Taking steps toward more fluent speech and finding a good support base, as in a support group can make life much more pleasant and worthwhile for stutterers.
